RESTORING BUZLUDZHA

Published in De Volkskrant 2/2021

A group of young architects restore the Buzludzha Monument, a dilapidated ufo-shaped socialist monument built in the 80es,
high on a mountain top, and inaugurated only a few years before the collapse of communism. The monument - the roof of which is larger than the dome of St. Peter's in Rome - had no clear-cut function, but it did have a clear purpose: to impress.

Today - like many monuments from communism in Eastern Europe -
Buzludzha is a juggernaut in decline.
Architect Dora Ivanova and her team try to save it from destruction. "It's a race against time."
